Twitch is home to the streams of some of the most popular competitive gaming scenes on the planet, including League of Legends, Overwatch, Counter-Strike, and more. Twitch viewers are very familiar with seeing esports plastered all over the site, and soon, they’ll be able to see Twitch kick off some esports of its own, according to an announcement today.
Twitch Rivals is a livestreamed series of showdowns between streamers and hosted by Twitch itself, and it begins this January. The first Rivals tournament will be for League, and it will feature teams of streamers, former pros, and more. The prize pool for this first tourney is $75,000.
Riot, the developer behind League, has held similar streamer showdowns in 2018, like at the 2018 NA LCS Summer Split Finals and All-Stars, but there are some differences with this event. The main difference is that each player on all 16 teams will be streaming from their perspectives on their own channels, and that will be on top of the main channel broadcast.
Aside from the format, not much else has been revealed by Twitch yet. The list of participants, times, and distribution of the prize pool are all still unknown, but Twitch promises that more info, including the rules, is coming in early 2019.
The tournament kicks off Jan. 15 and runs through Jan. 23.
