New World, Amazon’s shiny new MMO, has had an incredible start. Over a million players flooded into the game on launch day. It’s been so popular, that players have been left waiting in lengthy queues for hours on end.
Though Amazon continues to add new servers and increase the capacity of the existing worlds, the problem still remains. To get around these queue times, some players have even been using exploits to avoid being booted out of the game.
Here’s how long you can be away from your keyboard before getting kicked out of New World.
How long is the AFK timer in New World?
After leaving your character idle for 15 minutes, you’ll be met with a notification at the top-right of your screen warning you about the impending kick. At 20 minutes, you’ll be automatically booted from the game and have to start from the back of the queue again.
Amazon implemented an “AFK detection” system and even reduced the AFK timer from 25 to 20 minutes to prevent exploits.
“We have seen a lot of frustration around individuals who may be artificially remaining active enough in servers to avoid the automatic AFK mitigation that is built into New World,” Amazon said on Oct. 2. “We certainly agree that this is not acceptable behavior, especially when there are droves of individuals who are waiting patiently to get into a world.”
Amazon didn’t disclose the details of the system, but the devs have “every confidence” that players who playing New World “normally” will not experience any issues.
In the meantime, Amazon has been “working around the clock” to add additional servers to the game and will continue to do so until queue times have been stabilized.
