It’s hard to believe, but Apex Legends is now five years old. That’s half a decade’s worth of content, as well as the inevitable rises and falls in player count. In season 22, the devs are hoping to bring people back to the game.
After a tumultuous season 21 that started out promising with sizable updates to Broken Moon, the player count plunged in the back half of the season to numbers it hadn’t seen since 2021, according to Steam Charts. There were several reasons for this, from cheaters coming back with a vengeance to match-making concerns and review-bombing from players after controversial battle pass changes were announced, then subsequently walked back in part.
So, has season 22 changed any of that?
Current Apex Legends player count: How many players are in Apex in August 2024?
According to Steam Charts, Apex Legends has peaked at 314,327 concurrent players on Steam so far in season 22, while its current 24-hour peak is 287,593 players as of Aug. 8. Obviously, this number does not factor in EA’s own platform, nor does it take into account console players from PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch. Given all those platforms, it’s likely Apex crossed a million concurrent players on all platforms at some point in season 22.
Steam Charts is an incomplete picture, but it does have the most concrete numbers we’ll likely get as far as player count goes. And while the peak players for the season is an encouraging jump up in numbers from the end of season 21, when concurrent player peaks dropped below 200,000 for the first time in years, it’s also not close to the highs of even season 20 earlier this year, which routinely got over 400,000 player peaks on Steam.
What does all that mean for Apex? Well, it clearly still has some work to do with getting old players back and welcoming newbies into the fold. On the other hand, it’s still handily in the top 10 games on Steam Charts by player count, sitting comfortably in fifth between PUBG and GTA V.
