Pokémon battles have been drastically changed in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet by introducing a new mechanic dubbed Terastallizing with the latest generation.
Outside of essential battles in Scarlet and Violet’s main story, you will encounter these Tera Types through Tera Raids. You also get a hint at what Tera Type each Tera Raid’s boss is before you even begin the battle, which can help you pick the right Pokémon to bring. Just make sure you know what to look for.
How Tera Types work in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet
Once Terastallized, the Pokemon will switch to its Tera Type, allowing it to replace its original typing. Tera types can range from any of the eighteen types available, making for some unorthodox typings and advantages like rendering weaknesses to immunity or tripling an attack.

Opening the map, trainers will see colored stars with symbols scattered across the map. These stars mark where trainers can find Tera Raids, and the symbols correspond to the Pokémon’s respective Tera Type—for example, a blue star with a wing mark where a Flying Tera Type Pokémon will be.
There are 18 total Tera Types, including:
- Normal – Weak to Fighting
- Fire – Weak to Water, Rock, and Ground
- Ghost – Weak to Ghost and Dark
- Bug – Weak to Fire, Flying, and Rock
- Fighting – Weak to Flying, Psychic, and Fairy
- Rock – Weak to Grass, Water, Fighting, Ground, and Steel
- Flying – Weak to Electric, Rock, and Ice
- Water – Weak to Grass and Electric
- Steel – Weak to Fire, Fighting, and Ground
- Ground – Weak to Grass, Water, and Ice
- Electric – Weak to Ground
- Fairy – Weak to Poison and Steel
- Grass – Weak to Fire, Flying, Bug, Poison, and Ice
- Poison – Weak to Ground and Psychic
- Dragon – Weak Ice, Dragon, and Fairy
- Psychic – Weak to Bug, Ghost, and Dark
- Ice – Weak to Fire, Fighting, Rock, and Steel
- Dark – Weak to Bug, Fighting, Fairy
Pokémon that have been Terastallized cannot have their new type altered through Abilities or moves.
Tera Raid battles are physically represented by crystals protruding from the ground. Players only need to enter these crystals to kick off a Tera Raid battle. It should be noted that raid battles are more complicated than usual Pokémon battles, and their difficulty will be represented by a range of one to five stars, with five being the most difficult. However, there are more difficult options too.
Trainers do not exclusively need to traverse these map symbols to participate in a Tera Raid. Opening your Poké Portal menu and navigating to the Tera Raid Battle option, players can join another player’s raid battle, squaring off against a Tera Type Pokémon of unknown type and difficulty.
These battles can be brutal, depending on the chosen difficulty.
Anything higher than a five-star battle alone is almost impossible if your Pokémon are not close to level 100.
