Regular updates for Splatoon 3 are coming to an end, Nintendo announced on Sept. 15. The game will still be playable and receive balance patches and monthly challenges, but new content won’t be coming to the shooter after a little over two years of support.

Fans of Nintendo‘s team-based shooter Splatoon 3 have enjoyed a large number of content updates and in-game events over the last couple of years. New weapons and stages were added over time, and the single-player DLC Side Order also came out earlier this year. Most recently, another Splatfest was held, where players were divided into teams and competed against each other in Turf Wars to accumulate points. But all good things must come to an end.

Naturally, fans responded to the announcement of regular Splatoon 3 support ending with sadness, saying goodbye to the updates while being thankful for all of the fun they had during the game’s lifespan. Gamers are also eagerly awaiting what’s possibly next for the franchise.

Ironically, reflecting on time was the theme of the final Splatfest, pitting three teams based on Past, Present, and Future against each other. Team Past ended up coming out on top, and fans are speculating that could affect what might happen in a potential Splatoon 4 since the final Splatfests of the last two Splatoon games affected the plots of the following title.

Of course, Nintendo hasn’t actually announced a sequel to Splatoon 3, but that may happen in the future. Splatoon 3 is one of the best-selling games for the Nintendo Switch and has enjoyed continued popularity with both casual gamers and a growing competitive scene. Whether it’s for the current console or the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, many fans likely hope the Splatoon series will still have a bright future.
