Just days after leaving his sponsor, one of Korea’s best Starcraft 2 players has won the Intel Extreme Masters World Championship Katowice.
Former CM Storm Terran player Choi “Polt” Seong Hun took first place at the Spodek arena in Katowice, Poland today, making him the winner of the World Championship Series (WCS) Winter leg of Starcraft 2’s professional circuit.
Choi Seong Hun took a 4-2 victory over Team Liquid Zerg player Jens “Snute” Aasgaard after a dominating bracket run, only losing two matches in three series prior to the final. The games were close, but Choi Seong Hun outskilled Aasgaard to take the win.
The victory comes only three days after Choi Seong Hun ended his partnership with Cooler Master’s CM Storm outfit, which he joined exactly three years ago. Katowice was his last outfit in the team’s jersey and he will no longer compete as a part of the squad in the future.
Katowice is one of the first major international tournaments in Starcraft 2 this year. But the tournament lacked many of the game’s top players, including 2015 WCS champion Kim “herO” Joon Ho and runner up Cho “Maru” Seong Ju.
The players that weren’t competing doesn’t take away from Choi Seong Hun’s achievement, but it does bring into question how he will fare in the future versus stronger competition. The 2016 WCS is just ramping up, with the Korean leagues GSL and StarLeague currently running.
