After a years of relative inactivity, one of StarCraft’s top sides has shut down.
Team Acer, a StarCraft 2 team with a host of titles to its name, released a statement yesterday confirming its closure after six years of operation.
Fans had speculated about the future of the team in recent months, particularly since the retirement of Mun “MMA” Seong Won in December. But the announcement left them with few answers.
“I know that many of you are wondering and speculating about the reason,” the team’s statement said. “But as in all walks of life as well the modern e-sports is subject to change. Plans and strategies change and projects start and will be terminated.”
Despite some renewed interest since the release of Legacy of the Void, it’s clear that some organizations in StarCraft are struggling to maintain a presence.
Between former players Seong Won and Lee “INnoVation” Shin Hyung, Team Acer amassed six World Championship Series (WCS) and Global Starcraft League (GSL) wins as well as five titles in team competitions.
The team was also home to one of esports’ first and most high-profile female competitors, Sasha “Scarlett” Hostyn.
Though the team did delve into other games at points, including League of Legends and FIFA, they will be best remembered in StarCraft for meshing together top Korean talent with some high-performing foreigners.
