As is often the case with Bethesda games, there are plenty of options available when it comes to houses in Starfield

Though there are options for you to have your own house that don’t require digging deep into your pockets—like the room available to you in The Lodge once you join Constellation or the customizable house with wings that is your spaceship—there is nothing quite like having a proper house to rest your weary head within after your long space travels.

Not only this, but having your own house is practical, as it gives you more storage options. This can be particularly handy if you’re the sort of player that picks up everything they come across and often finds themselves lacking carry capacity.

The main cities in Starfield all have property options for you: New Atlantis on Jemison, Akila City on Akila, and Neon on Volii Alpha. Additional houses also become available after you complete certain quests later in the game.

Buying a house in Starfield: Explained

There is a total of six different houses that players can purchase or earn, with each of the three major cities giving you two choices each.

In Akila City and Neon, you’ll be able to walk in and buy any of the available houses so long as you have the required credits. In New Atlantis, however, you’ll have to be a registered citizen of the United Colonies first. If you want some New Atlantis housing, you’ll have to progress through the United Colonies missions until you complete one called Friends Like These. To start the UC questline, you’ll want to enter the MAST building and sign up for the UC Vanguard with Commander Tuala in the building’s lobby.

It’s worth noting that there’s no limit on the houses you can own in Starfield. If you truly desired, you could own every single piece of property at one time. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t have a realty quest or minigame, and you cannot sell any house you purchase.

Neon houses

  • Price: 6,500 Credits

It’s definitely not the fanciest house you can purchase, but the Sleep Crate in the crime-ridden streets of Neon does at least come with a bed! However, there’s no room for much else. Okay, it’s not the best house, but it is dirt cheap!

To buy your Sleep Crate, you’ll want to visit the Neon location called Ebbside and speak with a vendor named Izna Sundaraman. It can be tricky to find her, but you’ll want to be on the north part of Ebbside. Taking the Ebbside entrance between the Neon stores Enhance and The Vol II Hotel, you should walk forward until you spot a small booth on your right with Izna inside.

Sky Suite

  • Price: 235,000 Credits

In true cyberpunk fashion, the city of Neon’s housing choices range from the grimy Sleep Crate to the pristine and expensive Sky Suite. We’re talking expensive. It’s only a one-time fee, of course, but nearly a quarter of one million credits certainly isn’t chump change in Starfield.

To buy this swanky house, you’ll need to head to the western end of Neon and enter the Astral Lounge club. Once you’re inside, head to the bar that’s opposite the entrance. Speak with bartender Boone Morgan, and drop a fat stack of credits to acquire your new, luxurious penthouse.

Akila City houses

Stretch Apartment

  • Price: 45,000 Credits

It’s only one bedroom, but the price for this Akila City house isn’t too bad for how much room it offers. Sure, it looks a bit like a repurposed prison on the inside, but a space explorer’s touch like yours could make it downright cozy.

The house itself is a bit higher than surrounding houses on the northern perimeter of the city. It’s located right next to the store Sinclair’s Books, which is a great place to find a fairly lucrative questline.

To purchase the Stretch Apartment, you’ll need to speak with Ngodup Tate. He can be found behind the enormously tall building in the center of Akila City known as The Rock. Head a bit to the north once you’re behind The Rock, and you’ll see him standing outside a building.

Core Manor

  • Price: 78,000 Credits

Luckily, the building that Ngodup is standing outside of is the other piece of property you can purchase in Akila City: the Core Manor. While “manor” might be a bit generous, it does offer a nice amount of room for you to decorate and fill as you see fit. Is there enough space to justify being so much more expensive than the Stretch Apartment? That’s up to you.

New Atlantis houses

The Well Apartment

  • Price: 30,000 Credits

Yes, New Atlantis is shiny and pristine, but that’s only on the surface. Down below in the slums known as The Well, things are a bit grungier. However, there’s a nice little apartment for sale here if you feel so inclined. It’s actually got plenty of room for the price, and it is one of the more private-feeling apartment options in Starfield.

To find it, you’ll want to locate Jake’s Bar. Head to the northern end of this establishment, and you’ll see a sign outside that reads “UPPER LEVEL.” Head up those stairs, and the very first door you’ll see is the entrance to your new home.

If, of course, you’re already a UC citizen. If you are, you can purchase this house from Zora Sangweni at Aphelion Realty. Her office is a very open-concept building found in the northwestern region of the MAST District. It’s a blue building surrounded by foliage, sandwiched between the Colony Wars Memorial and the Freestar Collective Embassy.

Penthouse

  • Price: Complete the United Colonies Faction Questline

Despite the fact that the New Atlantis penthouse is given to you for free, it’ll take a bit of work to acquire. Your ritzy house at the top of the city with plenty of room and a great view will require you to embark on some fairly harrowing quests for the UC after you’ve signed up as a vanguard.

While the apartment down in The Well can be purchased after completing the quest Friends Like These, the penthouse is kept out of your reach until you’ve finished the entire questline. Better get busy!

When you have finished doing all that the UC questline requires, you’ll need to visit Aphelion Realty to grab the key to your new digs. After that, your pristine penthouse will be waiting on the eastern side of the Residential District as part of Mercury Tower. Take the elevator up and enjoy!

Starfield houses that come with traits

Dream Home trait

If all of those housing options sound like too lengthy of a process for you, there is a way to obtain a house at the start of the game. That said, it comes with a hefty price.

You can own a house straight away in Starfield by selecting the Dream Home trait when choosing your traits during character customization. Picking this trait will immediately provide access to your very own luxury villa on the planet of Nesoi in the Olympus system

Of course, the trait comes with a catch. Your dream home wasn’t free, so you’ll start the game in debt by 125,000 credits. You’ll need to start repaying your debt straight away, with payments of 500 credits once a week.

If you are willing to be burdened with crippling debt from the get-go, then make sure to choose the Dream Home trait when creating your character.

Kid Stuff trait

While this trait doesn’t actually get you your own house, it does let you visit your parents’ house. Well, the parents of your character in Starfield.

With the Kid Stuff trait as part of your character build, you’ll be able to visit your parents at an apartment in New Atlantis in the Residential District. It won’t offer as much in terms of storage space, but you’ll at least be able to check in on your folks.
