While the teaser shows that HBO has added in new characters and reworked a few segments from Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed sequel, many of the scenes look distinctly familiar, as if they were pulled straight from the game.

The trailer opens up with a tracking shot of Bella Ramsey’s Ellie—now all grown up—as she strolls through Jackson, the settlement in which she resides with Joel, Dina, Jesse, Tommy, and Maria. Jackson is a suitable substitute for a permanent refuge in comparison to Joel and Ellie’s adventures in season one, particularly as they find themselves roaming the United States with no place to call home.

Early on in The Last of Us: Part 2, Joel gifts Ellie a guitar, then promises to teach her how to play it. It’s during this scene that Joel sings “Future Days” by Pearl Jam and a version of the song plays in the background of the teaser. “Future Days” became the unofficial theme of The Last of Us: Part 2, as Ellie sings a snippet of it for Dina in the Music Shop.

Speaking of Ellie playing the guitar, there’s a lovely optional scene in The Last of Us: Part 2 that triggers a cutscene where Dina sits at her feet and listens to her sing “Take On Me” by A-ha, which is just a testament to how talented Ashley Johnson truly is. It gives some nice context to Ellie and Dina’s relationship and strengthens their bond, while also showing off everything Ellie learned from Joel.

After Ellie’s confrontation with a small-minded bigot named Seth, she finds herself embittered by Joel’s over-protectiveness, so she goes to confront him one night when he’s out on the porch drinking coffee and—you guessed it—playing the guitar. Ellie lashes out at Joel for rescuing her from the hospital, where she was intended as a sacrifice for the greater good due to her immunity.

The Last of Us: Part 2 turns out to be just as much Abby’s story as it is Ellie’s, which means both characters have a handful of flashback sequences explaining the circumstances under which Ellie and Abby find themselves becoming mortal enemies. Young Abby gets the same father-daughter pep talk as Ellie and Joel when Jerry Anderson quizzes her about her relationship with Owen during a tracking lesson.

During a fast-paced segment of Abby’s story, players find themselves outrunning a horde of Infected. Abby almost gets snagged through a wire fence, but manages to go prone and crawl her way to safety. She gets attacked by a straggler that comes awfully close to finishing her off, but Joel and Tommy intervene just in time to save Abby’s life.

The Seraphite Prophet

The Seraphites are a group of enemies both Ellie and Abby encounter in The Last of Us: Part 2. Also known as Scars, the Seraphites are a religious cult who fight for control over Seattle against the Washington Liberation Front (WLF). The Seraphites worship a mysterious figure known as the “Prophet”—a woman with a singular vision who was responsible for forming the cult post-outbreak.

Ellie and Dina escape the subway

Though it won’t ever compete with the Rat King sequence, Ellie and Dina’s trek through the subway is equally as spine-chilling.
