The answer to the Overwhelming victoryclue from the Sept. 19 NYT Mini Crossword puzzle is “ROUT.” Rout is an old-fashioned word first used as early as the 13th century. Still, it wasn’t until much later that it began to refer to a disastrous military defeat or to overcome someone or something disastrously or overwhelmingly.

How difficult is the crossword clue ‘Overwhelming victory’ to solve?

At a glance, this clue doesn’t seem too difficult. However, as soon as you realize you only have four letters and there are many options, it starts to become increasingly difficult to solve. I had to solve a few of the surrounding clues before I realized the answer. Even then, I wasn’t sure it was correct until I’d successfully completed the entire puzzle because rout isn’t commonly used. Because of this, I’d say this clue deserves a five out of five in difficulty.
