Game Director Ben Brode joined Production Director Jason Chayes to introduce the newest expansion for the popular Blizzard title Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft. The new expansion will be focused on a World of Warcraft area called Un’Goro’s Crater. The video features Elise Starseeker leading a group of children into the prehistoric area, explaining the surrounding flora and fauna of the area.
The expansion will focus on the new minion type, Elementals, introducing new elemental cards as well as changing older ones to feature the elemental text. The new mechanic that will feature in the Journey to Un’Goro expansion is called Adapt. The Adapt keyword will give you three options that will change the card into something new. There will be 10 total Adapt options.
In the video, three new cards were shown off. The first was a spell called Volcano, a Shaman spell card that deals damage to characters on the board. Next, a new legendary was shown that acts like a Pheonix and is called Pyros. Verdant Longneck is the first card shown with the Adapt keyword and is a Druid minion.
Arguably the biggest change to the game will be a new set of cards called Quests. Quests are all one mana legendaries that will be in your hand at the start of the game. They act like Secrets in the sense that the card appears above your hero portraits, but the difference with Quests is that you can see the progress of the Quest and your opponent can see what the Quest is. If you are able to complete a quest, you will receive a massive reward like Amara Warden of Hope, which sets your hero’s Health at 40.
The Journey to Un’Goro is the first expansion for 2017 and is the first of the Year of the Mammoth for Hearthstone. The expansion will feature 135 new cards added to the game. More cards will be shown starting March 17, and the expansion will be launched in April. This will be Hearthstones’ fifth expansion, joining Goblins vs Gnomes, The Grand Tournament, Whispers of the Old Gods, and Mean Streets of Gadgetzan.
