Riot Games originally intended to release League of Legends with just 20 unique champions but eventually doubled that number leading up to launch day on Oct. 27, 2009. Now, 15 years later, there are a whopping 170 playable characters in the game.
Mel Medarda, a Piltover councilor and mage from Arcane, is the newest member of the League family, having arrived in early 2025 after the premiere of the Netflix show’s second season. Before her release, her own mother Ambessa hit live servers in November 2024, challenging foes in the top lane and making her grand appearance on esports stages across the globe.
Ambessa was preceded by Aurora, the Witch Between Worlds (champ 168), and Smolder, the Fiery Fledgling (champ 167), released in July 2024 and February 2024, respectively. Aurora hops in between realms, becoming invisible and bursting down enemy health bars, while Smolder is a cute little dragon with an attitude.
When I first played League in season one, I never imagined the champion roster would reach 100, let alone 170 (I was a Poppy one-trick pony, by the way). This just goes to show the longevity of the game throughout the years. Despite its ups and downs, it’s still going strong over a decade later, bringing in millions of players every month.
