Three-time League of Legends world champion Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok and former LCK player, coach, and caster (and current close friend of Faker) Kang “Cpt Jack” Hyung-woo fell today to North America’s representatives in the charity two-vs-two tournament at All-Stars. Their vanquishers? Yiliang “Doublelift” Peng and Joedat “Voyboy” Esfahani.
As you’d imagine, the results of the match immediately sparked an influx of “the gap is closing” memes, including the subhead of this very article. No, North America isn’t actually better than Korea based on the results of a two-vs-two tournament (especially this one), but it was still incredibly fun to watch.
Why wouldn’t this tournament decide something so significant like that? Well, for starters, both duos agreed to play Thresh and Alistar. When they both locked them in, no one actually knew that for sure, but Doublelift confirmed in the post-game interview that he convinced Faker to get on board.
The game was as slow as you’d think with Thresh and Alistar. Neither of these champions are loaded with damage, after all. Something they aren’t short of, however, is crowd control, and that made for some very exciting plays. The last fight of the game, for instance, was full of tower-headbutts and near-game-saving Flays. At the end of the day, though, Doublelift and Voyboy pulled it off better.
With that, $100,000 was awarded to the NA duo’s charity of choice, and the two-vs-two tournament concluded.
