After a disappointing finish at MLG Vegas and clawing their way through online 2k tournaments, Orbit have showed that they have shaken off the LAN rust and are ready to take the CWL London title.
They proved this through an impressive 3-0 sweep of Splyce, arguably the “EU God Squad” due to their run through the Vegas open bracket. And according to Joseph “Joee” Pinnington, this was the upset that bolstered his side’s confidence and silenced critics who were wary of Orbit.
“Everyone thought this was the God Squad when they picked up Jurd, Madcat with Bance and Josh,” Joee said. “When we dropped Josh at first, everyone asked ‘What are you doing?’ So everyone thought them two (Jurd and Madcat) were the better players. So I’d say it was an upset.”
This upset came off the heels of a shaky start in Hardpoint, where the team was down by more than a full hill, but still ended up with the 250-171 win.
“We just were staying composed and Trei (Trei “Zer0″ Morris) was starting to go off,” Joee said. “We just started getting consecutive back to back from spawns, and from that point, we had all the momentum going out of the game for S&D.”
After getting up to 2-0 in the series, the following Uplink on Frost slowed to a halt, as by halftime there was barely any score to speak of. Although there is the stereotype of “Uplink not being EU’s game,” it wasn’t a good enough excuse for Orbit, who parked the bus in the first half before swinging in the second half to win the series. And that was partially decided by Joee’s decision for a loadout change.
“We were playing kind of defensive, and then I pulled out a sub after a really bad start,” Joee said. “My team were carrying me through, and then I pulled out the sub and picked it up by a fair bit. So from that point on, when them three are killing and I am as well, we’re not going to lose to anyone really.”
After beating a team that performed the best out of all the EU sides in Vegas, and sat at the top of the pro point table for a good chunk of January, Joee feels that this is Orbit’s tournament to win, and hopes to see the so-called “God Squad” in the Grand Final.
“This is the best team of the event by far, so beating (Splyce) means we can beat anyone really,” Joee said. “Hopefully we see them again in the final, because they are the best team and we should see that matchup.”
