For the first time in the team’s history, Team Liquid have been relegated from the North American LCS.
With everything to do in their final games, a last loss to FlyQuest in one of the final regular season games of the Spring Split sealed the team’s fate and ninth place finish.
Needing a win to have a chance of staying in the league, Liquid took the first game of the series against FlyQuest to give themselves a great opportunity to win the match. However the side formerly known as Cloud9 Challenger fought back to take two relatively comfortable map wins and seal Liquid’s fate.
FlyQuest’s win also saw them confirm a playoff spot for themselves in their first season in the LCS.
They will be joined in those Spring Playoffs by Team Dignitas, who defeated Immortals earlier in the day in what amounted to a decider series. Immortals will have to settle for merely retaining their spot in the league after an up and down season.
Pheonix1 and CLG are also in the playoffs, along with top seeds TSM and Cloud9. The top seeds will receive a one round bye in the playoffs.
As for Liquid and last place finishers Team EnVyUs, they must now play the two best teams from the NA Challenger Series—Gold Coin United and eUnited—in a high stakes double elimination bracket to win their way back into the LCS.
