Overwatch fan Joshua Llorente has finished a stunning, fan-made Overwatch map.
Llorente began work on the map earlier this year, he said on Reddit. It took about two months to finish as he was also finishing up his college thesis. Llorente countinued working on Overwatch-styled art as he practiced his craft ahead of graduation. He posted a teaser video in October, and has since made serious progress on the Cairo map.
Unreal Engine 4, 3ds Max, Substance Painter, and Photoshop were all used in the process.
When asked if Llorente was interested in working at Blizzard, he said he hoped to apply in the future, because he has a lot to learn as a 3D artist, he wrote. “I still need to learn a lot,” Llorente said on Reddit. “I don’t have the proper knowledge in creating an optimized, fully functional environment. I think I’ll gather first some experience here in our local game dev industry. And maybe in the future I’ll try to apply there.”
The finished piece isn’t playable like an Overwatch map, but it is gorgeous. Llorente’s stylized map is clearly influenced by Overwatch’s art, and it looks like it’s been plucked straight out of the game.
