Overwatch’s Workshop mode is proving its ability to yield endless possibilities, and one Reddit user has created the latest game mode worth checking out: Spies vs. Mercs.
Spies vs. Mercs, or Spies vs. Mercenaries, originated with the Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell series. The mode pits two teams against each other: spies and mercenaries. One team takes the offensive and must complete an objective using their unique character class benefits while the other team tries to stop them.
A dedicated Overwatch fan recreated the mode through the game’s Workshop feature and posted the creation on Reddit today. In the Overwatch version of the game mode, players play either as Sombra or one of four characters as the spies or mercenaries, respectively.
Spies must capture two objectives on a map of three before the timer runs out, while the mercenaries try to stop them. Additionally, mercenaries can kill all the spies to win the game. The game mode is simple enough, but each of the characters have new abilities that reiterate their roles as either a stealth or assault-based class that they must use strategically to win the game.
Spies, or Sombra players, can wall jump, essentially double jumping from one platform to the next. They can also throw a flashbang and temporarily knock down their opponents by hitting them with a melee attack from behind. Once a mercenary has been downed three times, they’re eliminated.
Spies rely heavily on stealth, and they can crouch past their opponent’s mines and defuse them. Similarly, spies can work together to reach higher positions by crouching and staying idle, allowing their allied teammate to get a boost when pressing F on the crouched spy.
Mercenaries, on the other hand, consist of four different characters: Ashe, Baptiste, Widowmaker, and Soldier: 76. Each come with their own unique abilities, including a stun mine for Soldier, a sprint and motion sensor for Widowmaker, a surveillance camera and chaff grenade for Baptiste, and an incendiary mine for Ashe.
Those who want to try out the Spies vs. Mercs game mode can enter the creation’s code C7373 into their Workshop’s “Presets” option.
