If you’re like me, you stumbled into the Deep Tunnels in GreedFall 2’s tutorial and seemingly got trapped. Well, I have great news: There’s a way to get out without reloading a past save—but you’re going to have to fight the renaigse for powerful explosives.

When you first enter the Deep Tunnels, you’ll hear cries for help from miners from a neighboring clan who have been trapped behind fallen rock that was caused during a landslide. After the dialogue sequence, you’ll receive a new section of the quest called A New Evil, which tasks you with identifying the cause of your clan’s poisoned water supply. This new leg of the quest requires you to destroy the wall the miners are trapped behind, freeing the people from their rock prison. When you approach the wall, however, GreedFall 2 will say you need to first find “powerful explosives.”

It’s not exactly clear what these explosives are or where you can find them, but you’ll need to travel deeper into the Deep Tunnels if you want to find out.

Here’s where to find those powerful explosives in GreedFall 2.

How to free the trapped miners in GreedFall 2

As you progress deeper and deeper into the mining tunnels, you’ll eventually reach the area shown on the map below. You won’t be able to exit this area without destroying a second rock wall—and you can only do so by using a “powerful explosive” which you don’t have—making it feel as though you’re as trapped in the mines as the miners themselves.

When you interact with this wall, a dialogue between you and your companions will begin, and the game will indicates you must destroy this rock wall before the miners suffocate.

Across from the destructible wall will be a ladder. If you climb up the ladder, you’ll receive a prompt from the game indicating you’re entering a restricted area. There are three guards from the Bridge Alliance (one of GreedFall 2‘s many factions) here and if they see you, it’ll immediately trigger a fight and lower your reputation with the alliance. Unfortunately for players who leveled up Diplomacy first like me, there’s no way to sweet-talk your way out of this one.

In the middle of the area is a chest. One of the guards overlooks the area where the chest lies, so you likely won’t be able to sneak your way in. I eventually had to fight my way through, even though creating conflict here causes a dip in your reputation with the faction. You best prepare yourself, though; this was a bit of a fight for me, given how I was only level three and I had lower health coming into the skirmish. I was luckily able to cause one of the guards to bug out and stand still by perching my character on the middle stair next to the chest. This allowed me to attack without taking damage, and eventually I whittled my foes down.

Once you defeat the enemies, you can open the chest in peace. In it you’ll find the following items:

  • Medium Explosive
  • Reinforced Combat Gaiters (64 Physical Defense, Seven Magic Deflection)

After picking up the pants and the Medium Explosive, you can then head back to the wall and interact with it to destroy it. Be sure to stand back, though; you don’t want to get caught in the blast. With the wall destroyed, you can continue on your merry way to free the miners and get one step closer to figuring out how your clan’s water supply is being poisoned.
